Welcome principal Hart
This fall we welcomed Mr. Bert Hart as the new Principal of Robert E Lee Elementary. Mr. Hart is very familiar with our neighborhood schools, having taught and/or led at JFK Learning Center, Stonewall Jackson, and Lakewood. He is excited (and so are we!) that he is joining our Lee community! Mr. Hart has been kind enough to share some fun facts about himself.
-I grew up in Pine Bluff, AR
-Served in the US Navy as a submariner from 1976-1980
-Received a BA in English/Communication from the University of AR-Fayetteville and taught freshman English there as a graduate assistant. This is also where I met my wife, Jennifer.
-My wife teaches at Dealey Montessori
-We have two children - Ben (26) and Leah (21) both of whom live in Fayetteville, AR
-Managed a Kinko's Copies in Jonesboro, AR and Ft. Collins, CO
-Began my teaching career at Sunset High School and then South Oak Cliff High School. Transferred to Stonewall Jackson and taught sixth grade for nine years.
-Received my MEd. in school administration from Texas A&M-Commerce and began my admin career at Kennedy Learning Center.
-I returned to Stonewall as assistant principal and later served in that same capacity at Bayles and Highland Meadows. in 2010 I returned to Stonewall as AP before transferring to Lakewood in 2015. I have served as interim principal at Lakewood since March of this year.
-I have a boxer named Finnegan and a pug named Peanut.
-My family and I have visited 49 of the 50 states and have camped in most of those. I enjoy kayaking, hiking, camping, and reading.

Lee School of Choice, International Baccalaureate Update
Lee is currently in the Candidacy Phase of this 2-3 year process towards becoming an Accredited Primary Years International Baccalaureate school. The IB steering committee, composed of a diverse group of teachers, administrators, and staff, and lead by Ms. Barnwell (our IB Coordinator) will be submitting Lee's Candidate Phase Request for Authorization to IB International this fall.
Spanish is now our IB language and Spanish instruction for all students at Lee began August 2016. All students K - 5th grade (including dual language students) will participate in the IB Spanish exposure program, sharing Lipscomb's IB Spanish teacher and receiving instruction every other week with a daily 5 lab structure. An IB school visit (from DISD IB team) will take place Sept 14th-15th in preparation for the IB International candidacy visit later this year.
The IB steering committee has developed the following Vision/Mission/Core Beliefs statement:
Vision: Robert E. Lee seeks to empower our students to be transformational leaders equipped with skills to become globally conscious citizens dedicated to lifelong learning.
Mission: Our mission is to develop well-rounded students through an inquiry-based curriculum that will expand their creativity, promote respect of the global community, and cultivate reflective thinkers.
Core Beliefs:
1. Our purpose is to foster the development of well-rounded students.
2. Staff members must have a dedication to high quality transdisciplinary instruction.
3. Intercultural understanding and respect are greatly valued and practiced daily.
4. Stakeholders must have a commitment to children and to the pursuit of excellence.
Ms. Santos' presentation on IB from the April 14th PTA meeting is summarized here.

Have a great summer!
Congratulations Lee Elementary. 2013-14 the PTA participated in an It's Time Texas Fundraising challenge to raise funds to purchase water bottles for our staff (so they can model water drinking to our students and keep well hydrated and healthy). When we met our fundraising goal we were entered in a drawing for new gym equipment and guess what...we won!
Last year our challenge was to raise money for pedometers for our preK-2nd grade students. We met our goals of fund raising, social media shares, and additional activities. We did not win in the drawing for the grand prize but we certainly won with fun and fundraising. To view some of the activities students, parents, and staff participated in visit our It's Time Texas challenge page at:
